Characters We Love: Miyako Hotsuin

You don’t need us to tell you that the characters are the lifeblood of this series, but that doesn’t mean we can’t rave about some of our faves! And that’s just what this series is for, so let’s dig in and see what makes our favorite characters tick, starting with the best of the best: Miyako Hotsuin. Heck, by the end of this one you’ll be just as captivated as we are - that is, if you aren’t already!

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a moment to appreciate Suzuhito Yasuda’s sterling design work. This isn’t just another tired take on Yamato’s (excellent) design, there are plenty of incisive details to take in as well, from the whip to suggest her domineering personality to the superb Zettai Ryouiki that complements Yasuda’s irreverent approach to human anatomy. Really, there’s just something about this design that’s missing from Yamato’s, but we can’t quite place it. Miyako’s design is just a great highlight to her character that exemplifies some of the best visual design the series has to offer.

When it comes to personality, it’s no surprise that Miyako takes a few cues from her brother. But everything is not as it seems with Miyako, which is why she reads as such a mature, complex character. Under her cold exterior lies a caring heart and an extraordinary concern for humanity - qualities that hit you from right out of left field. This more kind-hearted side is especially evident in that one picture you see in the true ending, the one where she's smiling and you get a really good look at her thighs for once. It totally sends the message home with visuals alone.

This would normally be enough for us, but what really seals the deal is her true nature as the fourth Triangulum (those cool looking monsters you fight in the extra story) created by Canopus! (Spoilers) It's a really great twist that even makes you wonder why they didn't go that route in the original game. Not only that, but it completely reframes her Fate scenes where she muses about all sorts of deep problems plaguing the human condition. Can an artificial creation learn to live as a human being? It's these kinds of unusually philosophical questions that really lift Miyako above other characters in consideration. And to top it all off, her Triangulum form is one of the coolest in the series - it's hard to see in-game, but you can totally make her out clinging to the armless thing in the middle, all naked and shit. Bonus!

That's just the surface of what makes Miyako tick - the full story would be waaaay too long and salacious to get into here. Just take our word for it: it doesn't get any better than this, and if you're still holding onto your copy of the original Devil Survivor 2, toss that sucker in the trash and come see how it was meant to be. The elements detailed above all come together in the astounding and dynamic force that is Miyako Hotsuin, who has very appealing tiny hands.
